At the present time, you may be tempted to build your list on the big social media platforms like Facebook, YouTube or Twitter. That's fine but bear in mind those sites rise and fall in popularity. It's impossible to predict which will flourish in the future and which will not. You also don't control the platform when you build your list on a social network. At any time, they might change their rules in a waywhich disadvantages you. If you keep your own list separate from what you're doing on social media, you have an asset you own and control. So how do your build your list? There are usually just four steps involved:
Define your avatar – the profile of your typical prospect. To start building a responsive list, you have to figure out what type of person you're trying to appeal to. This "ideal customer" then becomes your avatar.
Figure out an ethical bribe which will appeal – something you can offer to give to people if they sign up for your list. Your ethical bribe needs to align with what your avatar really wants.
Create a "squeeze page" – which is simply a one-page web site where you offer your ethical bribe if they will just give you their name and contact details. Visitors to your site will either sign up or leave your Web site.
Drive traffic to your squeeze page – by using social media, search engines, pay-per-click, affiliates, joint venture partnerships, etc.
